How Do You Check a Cannabis Retailer's Licence?
In California, you can check any cannabis business on the Department of Cannabis Control's free public licence search. Search by business name or licence number to see whether the licence is active, what type it is and where the business is based. Buying from licensed sources is the simplest way to avoid untested, counterfeit products.

Why does a licence matter?
A cannabis licence means a business operates inside the state's legal system. Licensed businesses sell products that have been tracked from cultivation to sale and tested by licensed labs for potency and, where required, contaminants. Unlicensed sellers skip all of that, which is how counterfeit and contaminated products reach people. California's consumer information (opens in a new tab) explains why the state encourages buying only from licensed businesses.
How do you use California's licence search?
- Go to the Department of Cannabis Control's licence search (opens in a new tab).
- Search by the business's legal name, trade name or licence number.
- Open the result and check that the licence status is active.
- Check the licence type and the business address against what the seller tells you.
It's free and takes a minute. If a business can't be found, or its licence is expired, suspended or revoked, don't buy from it.
What do the licence types mean?
| Licence type | What the business does |
|---|---|
| Retailer | Sells cannabis to adults |
| Distributor | Moves products between licensees and arranges testing |
| Manufacturer | Makes products such as vapes and pre-rolls |
| Cultivator | Grows cannabis |
| Testing laboratory | Tests products before sale |
Brands like Jeeter work with licensed manufacturers and distributors; the business that sells to you should hold a retail licence. Rules and licence names differ in other states.
What about other states?
Every state with a legal market has its own regulator, and most publish a licence lookup on their website. Search for your state's cannabis control agency and look for a licence verification page. The same rule applies everywhere: buy only from businesses licensed in the state where you are, and don't take cannabis across state lines.
What else should a licensed seller provide?
- Products in sealed, labelled packaging with batch numbers.
- Age verification: you must be 21 or older.
- Clear contact details and a way to raise problems.
- Products that match the brand's real lineup.

Why do unlicensed sellers exist at all?
Legal cannabis carries real costs: licensing, testing, tracking and taxes. Unlicensed sellers avoid those costs, which lets them undercut legal prices, sometimes dramatically. That's why a deal that looks too good to be true often is. The savings come from skipping the very checks that make legal products safer: lab tests for potency and contaminants, child-resistant packaging and accurate labels.
Unlicensed shops can look professional, with branded displays and familiar products on the shelves. A storefront or a polished website isn't proof of a licence; the state's licence search is. Our guide to spotting fake Jeeter products explains how counterfeit products end up in these channels.
Does buying licensed help anyone else?
Yes. Licensed businesses pay taxes that fund state programmes, employ people under labour and safety rules, and are accountable when something goes wrong, including recalls. Buying from them supports a market where products can be traced and problems fixed. See how to check cannabis recalls for how that safety net works.
What should you do if a seller isn't licensed?
Don't buy from them, and don't use any product you've already bought from them. You can report unlicensed activity to the state regulator; in California, that's the Department of Cannabis Control (opens in a new tab). If you've used a product and feel unwell, call Poison Control on 1-800-222-1222.
