Can You Travel With Cannabis?
Within a state where adult-use cannabis is legal, adults 21 and over can usually carry limited amounts, sealed and out of reach in a vehicle. Taking cannabis across state lines is illegal, even between two legal states, because it breaks federal law. Flying with cannabis and taking it abroad are also illegal.

Why can't you take cannabis between legal states?
Cannabis is legal under some state laws but remains illegal under federal law. Crossing a state line puts you under federal jurisdiction, so carrying cannabis from one state to another is illegal even if it's legal in both. That applies whether you drive, fly, take a train or post it. The FDA's overview (opens in a new tab) explains how federal law treats cannabis products.
Can you fly with cannabis?
No. Airports and flights fall under federal law. The TSA (opens in a new tab) says marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products remain illegal under federal law, and that if officers find something that may break the law, they refer it to law enforcement. That's true even for flights within a single legal state.
What about travelling within your state?
Within a legal state, adults 21 and over can generally carry limited amounts. States set their own limits and rules, so check yours. In California, the what's legal (opens in a new tab) page explains possession limits and where you can and can't use cannabis. A few common rules:
- Keep products sealed in their original, labelled packaging.
- In a vehicle, keep cannabis out of reach, such as in the trunk.
- Never use cannabis while driving or as a passenger.
- Respect places where use is banned, including many public places and federal land such as national parks.
What about international travel?
Taking cannabis across national borders is illegal and can carry very serious penalties, even when travelling between places where it's legal. Don't pack it, and check that bags, pockets and cars are empty of cannabis before you travel abroad.
How should you plan a trip instead?
- Finish or leave products at home before travelling to another state.
- If you're visiting a legal state, buy there from a licensed source; see checking a retailer's licence.
- Read the local rules on possession and where use is allowed.
- Never drive after using cannabis; see can you drive after using cannabis?.
What about posting or shipping cannabis?
Sending cannabis through the mail or a parcel service across state lines is illegal under federal law, and the US Postal Service is a federal service. That includes sending it to yourself or to a friend in another legal state. Within a state, cannabis may only be sold and transported by licensed businesses under that state's rules, which is why you should only buy from licensed sources; see checking a retailer's licence.
What about carrying cannabis in hotels and rentals?
Even in legal states, many hotels, rental properties and venues ban smoking or vaping cannabis on their premises, and breaking those rules can mean fines or cleaning charges. Check the property's policy before you go. Public use is also restricted in many places; possession being legal doesn't mean you can use it anywhere.
If you're staying somewhere that doesn't allow cannabis, the simplest option is to leave it at home. And as always, keep products sealed, labelled and out of reach of children and pets while you're away.
Why does ShopJeeter only sell in certain states?
For the same reason. Cannabis can only be sold to adults 21 and over in states where it's legal, and it can't cross state lines. That's why checkout only offers states where a product is available, and why every order needs a 21+ confirmation and an ID check. Read what to expect when you order on ShopJeeter for the full process.
