How Long Do Pre-Rolls Stay Fresh?
Sealed and stored somewhere cool, dark and dry, pre-rolls keep their quality for several months. Once the tube is opened, they're best within a few weeks. Signs a pre-roll is past its best include harsh smoke, weak flavor and dry, crumbly flower; a musty smell or visible mould means it shouldn't be smoked at all.

Do pre-rolls expire?
Cannabis doesn't spoil like food, but it does lose quality over time. The terpenes that carry flavor fade first, so an old pre-roll tastes flatter. Cannabinoids also slowly break down with heat, light and air, so the effect can soften. And if moisture gets in, mould becomes possible, which is the one situation where a pre-roll truly shouldn't be used.
So rather than an expiry date, think of a freshness window that depends on how it's been stored.
How long do they last sealed versus opened?
| Condition | Best within | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sealed, stored well | Several months | Cool, dark, dry, steady temperature |
| Opened tube | A few weeks | Keep the cap on between uses |
| Half-smoked | A day or two | Relights taste harsher |
| Stored somewhere hot or bright | Much shorter | Flavor fades quickly |
These are rough guides rather than rules. Storage makes a bigger difference than time; see how to store pre-rolls.
How can you tell a pre-roll is past its best?
- The smoke is harsher or hotter than usual.
- The flavor is weak or papery.
- The flower feels very dry and crumbles out of the end.
- It burns fast and unevenly, even with good lighting.
None of these make it unsafe; it's just less enjoyable. Mould is different: a musty, damp or hay-like smell, or white, grey or fuzzy spots, mean you should not smoke it.
Do infused pre-rolls age differently?
A little. Concentrate and kief hold up reasonably well, but the terpenes in them still fade with heat and air, and very warm conditions can make oil soften and soak into the paper. Keep infused pre-rolls like Quad-Infused and Cannons upright in their tubes, away from heat, and they'll stay closest to how they left the producer.
How do you know how old a pre-roll is?
In legal markets, packaging carries a batch or lot number and usually a packaging or manufacture date. That tells you roughly when it was made, and the batch number links to its lab results. Our guides to reading a cannabis label and certificates of analysis explain where to find these details.
If the date or batch number is missing or unreadable, that's worth noticing: licensed products in legal markets are required to carry this information.
Can you make an old pre-roll taste better?
Not much. If a pre-roll has simply dried out, putting it in an airtight jar with a two-way humidity pack for a day can make it smoke a little smoother, but it won't bring back terpenes that have already faded. A slower, gentler lighting technique also helps a dry pre-roll burn more evenly; see how to light an infused pre-roll.
What you shouldn't do is try to 'rescue' a damp or mouldy pre-roll by drying it. Mould doesn't go away when the flower dries, and smoking it can be harmful. When in doubt, throw it out safely, out of reach of children and pets, and start fresh.
How do you avoid ending up with stale pre-rolls?
Buy sizes that match how often you smoke. If you only have the occasional session, a pack of half grams like Baby Jeeter or a Cannon three-pack keeps the rest sealed until you need it. If you share or smoke regularly, a single Jeeter XL or Infused 1g won't sit around long.
