Live Resin vs Live Rosin: What's the Difference?
Live resin and live rosin both start with cannabis frozen right after harvest, so they keep more of the plant's natural flavor. The difference is how the concentrate is made: live resin is extracted with a solvent that's then purged, while live rosin is pressed out with only heat and pressure. Jeeter uses both in its Cannon pre-rolls.

What does 'live' mean?
In cannabis, 'live' means the plants were frozen fresh, right after harvest, instead of being dried and cured first. Drying and curing take time, and some of the plant's aromatic compounds, the terpenes, are lost along the way. Freezing straight away locks more of them in.
That's the shared starting point for both live resin and live rosin, and it's why both are known for flavor. If terpenes are new to you, our post on what terpenes are is a good primer.
How is live resin made?
Live resin is made by extracting the oils from fresh-frozen cannabis with a solvent. The solvent pulls out the cannabinoids and terpenes, and is then purged so that what's left is a concentrated, aromatic oil. In legal markets, extraction is done by licensed manufacturers, and the finished product is lab-tested before sale.
Wikipedia's overview of hash oil (opens in a new tab) explains the general family of extracts that live resin belongs to.
How is live rosin made?
Live rosin skips solvents entirely. The resin glands, the tiny trichomes that hold most of the plant's cannabinoids and terpenes, are first separated from fresh-frozen flower, often using ice water. That material is then pressed between heated plates, and the pressure squeezes out the oil. Only heat and pressure are used.
Because it's solventless and takes careful handling, live rosin is often seen as a craft product. It can be more expensive to make, and the results vary more from batch to batch.
How do they compare side by side?
| Feature | Live resin | Live rosin |
|---|---|---|
| Starting material | Fresh-frozen cannabis | Fresh-frozen cannabis |
| Method | Solvent extraction, then purging | Heat and pressure only |
| Solventless? | No | Yes |
| Known for | Bright, consistent flavor | Craft, full-spectrum flavor |
| In Jeeter pre-rolls | Cannon Live Resin | Cannon Live Rosin |
Which one should you choose?
Both are flavor-first, so start with the strain and the mood you want. If you prefer products made without any solvents, choose live rosin. If you want a wide choice of strains with a bright, consistent flavor, live resin is a great place to start. Many people try both in the same strain to see which they prefer.
You can compare them directly in Jeeter's Cannon range: Cannon Live Resin and Cannon Live Rosin. Our post on what a Jeeter Cannon is explains the pre-roll itself.
Why do live products cost more?
Making any 'live' concentrate takes more care than working with dried flower. The plants have to be frozen right after harvest and kept frozen until processing, which takes freezer space, planning and speed. Live rosin adds another step: separating the trichomes, often with ice water, before pressing, which yields less concentrate from the same amount of plant.
That extra effort is reflected in the price. Many people feel the flavor is worth it, especially for strains they already enjoy. If you're comparing value, look at the size and format as well as the label: a half-gram pre-roll from a three-pack is an easy way to try a live product without committing to a larger single.
Is live resin the same as live resin in vapes?
The concentrate is the same idea, but in vapes it's formulated as an oil that flows to a heating coil. Jeeter's All-in-One Live Resin vapes use live resin this way. If you're comparing live resin with Liquid Diamonds in vapes, see live resin vs Liquid Diamonds.
Whichever format you choose, check the label and lab report for the batch details, start with a small amount and give it a few minutes before having more.
