How Much Should a Beginner Use? Start Low, Go Slow
If you're new to cannabis, or new to a stronger product, start with one or two small puffs and wait several minutes before deciding on more. Effects from smoking and vaping arrive quickly but keep building, and taking more too soon is the most common mistake. Choose a calm setting, skip alcohol and never drive.

Why does starting low matter?
Everyone responds to cannabis differently, and the same amount can feel very different from one person to the next. Starting with a small amount lets you find out how a product affects you before you've taken more than you'd like. It's especially important with infused pre-rolls and vapes, which are stronger than plain flower; see what THC percentage means.
The CDC (opens in a new tab) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (opens in a new tab) both describe how cannabis affects coordination, judgment and reaction time, which is part of why a cautious start makes sense.
How quickly do effects start?
When cannabis is smoked or vaped, effects begin within minutes. But they don't arrive all at once: they keep building for a while after you inhale. That's the trap. People take a puff, feel little, take several more, and then feel all of them together. Waiting a few minutes between puffs avoids it.
What does starting low look like in practice?
- Take one or two small, gentle puffs.
- Wait several minutes before deciding on more.
- Pick a smaller format, like a half-gram Baby Jeeter, so it's easy to stop.
- Use cannabis somewhere comfortable and familiar, ideally with someone you trust.
- Eat something beforehand and keep water nearby.
- Skip alcohol: combining them can make effects stronger and less predictable.
How do formats compare for beginners?
| Format | Good for beginners? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Half-gram pre-roll | Yes | Small and easy to stop partway |
| All-in-One vape | Yes, with care | Simple to use; strong oil, so small puffs |
| Large infused pre-roll | Later | Strong and hard to judge at first |
| Quad-Infused | Not as a first try | Jeeter's strongest style |

What if you've had too much?
Feeling too high is uncomfortable but usually passes. Stop using cannabis, move somewhere calm and safe, sit or lie down, sip water and remind yourself the feeling will fade. A snack and some quiet time often help. Don't drive, and don't take anything else to 'balance it out'.
Get help if symptoms are severe, such as chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting or confusion: call 911. For advice, call Poison Control on 1-800-222-1222 or visit poison.org (opens in a new tab). If a child or pet may have eaten cannabis, call Poison Control or your vet straight away.
Who should avoid cannabis or take extra care?
The CDC (opens in a new tab) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (opens in a new tab) highlight groups who should avoid cannabis or speak to a doctor first, including people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, people under 21, and people with certain health conditions or who take medicines that may interact with it. Cannabis can also affect memory and attention, so avoid it before work, study or anything that needs your full focus.
Store cannabis securely and out of sight of children and pets. Products like pre-rolls and vapes can look appealing, and accidental use by children is a real risk.
How do you build on a good first experience?
Keep notes: the product, the strain, how many puffs and how you felt. Next time, change only one thing, such as the strain or the number of puffs, so you learn what makes the difference. Over time you'll find the formats and strains that suit you. Our posts on picking a Jeeter by mood and indica vs sativa vs hybrid help with the next step.
